Eastern states experienced bombogenesis at the beginning of 2018 and the low pressure weather “bomb” is striking again, along with intense nor’easter winds with Winter Storm Riley.
After setting foot in the Northeast, Riley’s powerful presence dropped 24 inches of heavy, wet snow within 24 hours in a New York town, east of Buffalo. Mid-Atlantic states experience high winds, exceeding 70 mph in some areas and 102 mph wind gust was clocked at Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina. Blocked roadways and power outages have already occurred, and as excessive winds continue, delays in power line repairing and tree removal can be expected.
In addition to windy conditions, coastal cities, from southern Maine to North Carolina’s Outer Banks, are on coastal flood watch and have been issued warnings. Water levels along Massachusetts might possibly reach 3 to 4 feet above normal tides; flooding could be life-threatening. Road closures and flooded homes, businesses, and parking lots are possible for coastal Long Island. Flooding could reach as high as the first floor of low-lying homes and businesses of Manasquan, New Jersey. The National Weather Service warns: “ This is a LIFE & DEATH situation for those living along the coast, especially those ocean-exposed shorelines.”
