While everyone was busy getting ready to celebrate on New Year’s Eve, more than 100 earthquakes hit the California region that weekend but no one even blinked an eye.
Most of the the quakes were under 2.5 magnitude which are considered weak and unnoticed by people, said by Donyelle Davis, spokeswoman for the United States Geological Survey.
They also stated that since New Year’s Eve at least 24 quakes measured between 2.5 to 3.9 in magnitude. Most of the time, quakes under 4.0 generally don’t cause a lot of damage but that may not always be the case.
As of noon on New Year’s Day, California has had 191 earthquakes in the past 24 hours and 7,707 in the past 365 days, with the largest measuring 6.5 in Ferndale, according to the website earthquaketracker.com.
Catastrophic earthquakes seem to strike along the southern San Andreas Fault about once every 150 years, the Geological Survey said, citing studies examining the past 1,400 years.
The last time an enormous temblor on the fault struck Southern California was in 1857.
When you do the math (2017 – 1857 = 160 years), California is overdue by 10 years for the next big one, according to studies.
This is what 300 scientific experts believe will happen when the next “big one” hits.
Unless you take action today, there will be major losses of life and property.
