Winter Storm Grayson is already hitting the East Coast and expected to continue hitting tomorrow on Thursday. Winter Storm Grayson is a bomb cyclone, which “occurs when a midlatitude cyclone rapidly intensifies” as “a cold air mass collides with a warm air mass,” as defined by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

States brace for harsh winter conditions. Georgia has already declared a state of emergency. North Carolina and Virginia will be declaring a state of emergency in anticipation of Winter Storm Grayson.

An intense mixture of wind and snow, bombogenesis, brought snow this morning to the Sunshine State of Florida, and is expected to drop a foot of snow later this week in the Northeastern states. Temperatures continue to drop as bombogenesis rolls in.

States are well aware of the dangers that snow and ice bring. You know when you’re cold, but do you know when your pets are?

  • Keep your beloved pets inside as much as possible. If you cannot keep your pet inside, make sure they have a shelter that blocks wind and keeps them dry.
  • Make sure your pets have at least four days worth of food and water. If your pet is outside, check water regularly to ensure it does not freeze.
  • If you’re planning to use antifreeze or road salt to combat the frigid cold, please be aware ethylene glycol is commonly found in antifreeze and is poisonous to animals. Instead, look for products that contain propylene glycol.
  • Wipe and dry your pets’ feet to remove ice or road salt, or invest in animal booties.
  • Check your vehicle for critters and animals before driving. Small animals may seek warmth by crawling under the hood or up under the wheel wells.
